What Smoothing Treatments Really Do for Your Hair
Dana Mitchell - Stylist
Frizz-free hair is one of the most requested results in the salon, and it's exactly why professional smoothing treatments have become such a popular service. But there's a lot of misinformation out there about what these treatments actually do, how they work, and, most importantly, the care that goes into doing them safely and well.
Let's break it all down.
What a Smoothing Treatment Actually Does
At the most basic level, a smoothing treatment works by coating and conditioning the hair shaft to smooth the cuticle, cutting down on frizz and adding noticeable shine. Depending on the type of treatment and formulation, this can range from a subtle softening of frizz and added smoothness to a more noticeable reduction in volume and texture.
Most modern smoothing treatments fall into a few categories:
• Keratin treatments infuse the hair with keratin protein, coating and filling in damaged areas of the cuticle. This smooths the hair's surface, reduces frizz, and adds shine, while also making hair more resistant to humidity.
• Vegan smoothing treatments use plant-based, formaldehyde-free formulas to smooth the cuticle and reduce frizz without harsh chemical exposure, making them a gentler option for many clients.
The common thread across both of these is that they're not just about temporarily taming frizz with a product. They're changing how the hair behaves at a structural level, at least for a period of time.
Why the Prep Matters as Much as the Treatment
This is the part people don't see, and it's honestly where the real skill comes in. A smoothing treatment is only as good as the hair it's being applied to, which means the care and assessment that happens before the formula ever touches your hair is critical.
Before I recommend or perform any smoothing treatment, I'm looking at:
• Current hair health. Hair that's already fragile or over-processed needs a different approach than virgin, unprocessed hair. Sometimes that means a gentler formula, sometimes it means recommending we hold off and do some restorative work first.
• Color history. Keratin treatments can affect color, especially on hair that's been recently lightened or has a lot of previous chemical processing. Timing and formula selection matter enormously here.
• Porosity. Highly porous hair absorbs product differently than hair with a tighter cuticle, which affects processing time and how the treatment will ultimately perform.
• Your actual goals. Do you want a subtle reduction in frizz, or are you hoping for something smoother and sleeker overall? These require different formulas and different application techniques.
Skipping this assessment is how people end up disappointed with results, or worse, with hair that's been damaged by a treatment that wasn't right for their hair's current condition.
The Application Process
A proper smoothing treatment isn't a quick, rushed service, and it shouldn't be. Depending on the type of treatment and your hair's length and density, sessions typically take between two and four hours. The general process includes:
1. A clarifying cleanse to remove buildup so the formula can penetrate evenly
2. Careful, sectioned application of the smoothing formula
3. A processing period where the product needs to sit and work
4. Precise blow-drying and, in many cases, flat-ironing to seal the treatment into the hair
5. A final finishing step to complete the look
Every one of these steps affects the outcome, which is why technique and experience matter just as much as the product itself.
Aftercare: Protecting Your Investment
The days immediately following a smoothing treatment are important. Most treatments require you to avoid washing, tying up, or clipping your hair for a set period (often 24–72 hours) to allow the treatment to fully set.
After that initial window, I always recommend:
• Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to protect the treatment and extend its life, like Repairing Shampoo and Repairing Conditioner
• Avoiding excessive heat styling, which can be gentler on hair now that frizz is reduced. On days you do reach for hot tools, Blowout Defense Spray helps shield hair from heat up to 356°F
• Regular deep conditioning to maintain moisture balance, since smoothing treatments can shift how hair holds hydration. Our Reparative Treatment Mask is a great option, since it's built to help mend broken bonds while it deeply hydrates
• Spacing touch-ups appropriately, usually every three to five months depending on hair growth and how the treatment is holding up
The Bottom Line
A great smoothing treatment isn't just about the formula on the shelf. It's about a thoughtful process that considers your hair's unique history, health, and goals from start to finish. When it's done right, the result isn't just frizz-free hair; it's hair that's easier to manage, has more shine, and genuinely feels healthier day to day.
If you're curious whether a smoothing treatment is right for your hair, that conversation is always the best place to start.
