Get ApprovedYour Hair Color Is Talking to You
A Holistic Approach to Color and Scalp Health
Nelida D'Alessandro - Color Manager
When clients sit in my chair, they usually want to talk about one thing: the color. Is it too warm? Too flat? Fading too fast? But after years of working with hair, I've learned that color almost never lives in isolation. Your daily habits, your stress levels, and even the health of your scalp are all quietly shaping how that color looks and behaves, often before you ever notice a change in the mirror.
That's why I approach every color transformation holistically. Holistic hair color means looking past the formula on the shelf and paying attention to everything feeding into it, because if we only focus on the color itself and ignore the rest, we're treating a symptom, not the source.
Your Everyday Life Is Already Coloring Your Hair
Most people don't realize how much their day-to-day habits reshape their color between salon visits.
• Hard water leaves mineral deposits that dull vibrancy and cause uneven oxidation. If your color looks "off" from what left the salon, hard water is often why. A weekly reset with Clarifying Shampoo lifts that buildup before it dulls your color.
• Heat opens the cuticle, letting color molecules, especially warm tones, escape faster, which is why reds and coppers fade quickly for some clients. Misting with Blowout Defense Spray before styling helps hold color in as the cuticle closes.
• UV rays oxidize pigment, turning blondes brassy and brunettes warm. Chlorine can strip color and shift tones, sometimes green, overnight. Alternating in IndiGlow De-Brassing Shampoo and Conditioner keeps brassy tones neutralized.
• Dehydration and nutrient gaps show up as porosity, and porous hair holds color unevenly. Signature Shampoo and Conditioner replenish moisture so color has an even surface to hold onto.
• Cortisol and hormonal shifts affect oil production and pigment uptake, so hair can behave differently through life transitions, even with the same formula.
None of this means fearing tap water or sunshine. It means we build your color plan around your real life, not just a shade.
Why Scalp Care Is Non-Negotiable
Here's something people rarely connect: a healthy scalp is the foundation of healthy, vibrant color. Your scalp is skin, and like the skin on your face, it needs balance: not too much oil, not too dry, no inflammation, no buildup. This is exactly why I love the Nutrire scalp care line, which is formulated by scalp type rather than a one-size-fits-all approach: S.1 Calm for dry, sensitive scalps, S.2 Renew for normal scalp balance, and S.3 Balance for oilier scalps.
An unbalanced scalp can lead to:
• Uneven color application, because buildup or excess oil creates a barrier that color can't penetrate consistently
• Increased sensitivity, making the scalp more reactive to color processing
• Weaker hair at the root, which affects how color grows out and how healthy your hair looks over time
This is why I've built scalp treatments into the color process itself rather than treating them as an optional add-on. Before a major color transformation, I like to assess the scalp the same way I assess the hair, checking for tightness, flaking, oil balance, and sensitivity. A calm, balanced scalp accepts color more evenly and supports healthier regrowth.
Between visits, I recommend clients think of scalp care for color-treated hair the way they think of skincare. The Nutrire T.1 Day / T.2 Night Serum Duo is one of my favorite ways to build this into a routine: T.1 Day is a lightweight, leave-in treatment for the morning, and T.2 Night gently exfoliates and rebalances the scalp overnight, so you're supporting scalp health (and the color that depends on it) around the clock, not just avoiding harsh sulfates that can strip both scalp and color.
Building a Color Plan That Actually Lasts
When a client comes in for a color transformation, I'm not just asking "what color do you want?" I'm asking:
• What does your week actually look like? How often are you in the sun, the pool, the gym?
• What's your water like at home?
• How are you feeling, and has anything shifted in your routine lately?
• What does your scalp feel like day to day?
These answers shape everything from the formula I choose to the aftercare I send you home with. A color that's designed around your real life, not just a photo you brought in, is a color that holds its integrity, grows out beautifully, and actually feels good on a scalp that's cared for, not just colored over.
Your hair color is never just about the color. It's a living, breathing part of you, shaped by everything you do and everywhere you go. My job is to work with that, not against it, so the transformation you leave with is one that lasts.
