Letting Your Body Lead the Session
Kat Kowalewski – Massage Therapist
When most people book a massage, they expect a fairly standard experience: pick a pressure level, maybe mention a sore spot, and let the therapist follow a routine from head to toe. There's nothing wrong with that approach, but it's not how I work. My approach is intuitive massage: a form of customized massage therapy built around listening closely to what your body is actually telling me in the moment, rather than following a fixed sequence regardless of what I find.
What "Intuitive"
Really Means
Intuitive massage isn't a single specific technique. It's a philosophy that shapes how I use technique. Instead of committing to one modality and applying it uniformly, I draw from a range of approaches and let your body's responses guide which combination we use, and where.
In practice, this looks like:
● Starting with a broad, exploratory touch to assess tension, temperature, texture, and areas that feel different from the rest
● Adjusting pressure and pace based on how tissue responds (releasing, resisting, or guarding) rather than a predetermined pressure setting
● Following patterns of tension as they show up, even if that means spending far more time in one area than originally planned
● Checking in through touch and conversation throughout the session, not just at the start
This means no two sessions with me are ever exactly the same, even for the same person. Your body isn't the same every time you walk in the door, and the massage shouldn't be either
Why This Approach Matters
Tension doesn't always show up where you expect it. That knot in your shoulder might actually be connected to tightness through your neck and upper back that started somewhere else entirely, maybe stress, maybe posture, maybe an old injury your body has been quietly compensating for. A rigid, one-size-fits-all massage can miss these connections completely.
By working intuitively, I can:
● Identify compensations and connected tension patterns you might not even be aware of
● Adjust in real time if an area is more sensitive than expected, or if something that seemed minor turns out to need more attention
● Blend techniques within a single session, so a client might get deep, targeted trigger point work in one area and slower, more restorative strokes elsewhere
● Respond to what your nervous system needs that day, whether that's calming and restorative or more active and therapeutic
What to Expect in a Session
Sessions typically begin with a short conversation about anything specific you're feeling: pain, stress, an old injury, tightness from your workouts, whatever's relevant. From there, I do an initial assessment through touch, working broadly to get a sense of your body before narrowing in.
Throughout the session, I'm paying attention to subtle cues: changes in breathing, muscle guarding, areas that soften quickly versus areas that need more time. I'll often check in verbally too, especially if I find something unexpected, so we can decide together how to spend the remaining time.
Because the session isn't following a rigid script, it can flow in a lot of directions. Some sessions end up being almost entirely focused on one region that clearly needs the most attention. Others move more broadly across the whole body. Both are equally "complete" sessions. The goal isn't to hit every area equally, it's to give your body what it actually needs in that hour.
Who Benefits Most From Intuitive Massage
This style works well for almost anyone, but it's especially valuable for:
● People with chronic tension or recurring pain patterns that don't seem to fully resolve with standard massage
● Athletes or highly active people whose bodies carry tension differently depending on training cycles
● Anyone managing stress that shows up physically: tight shoulders, jaw clenching, shallow breathing
● Clients who've felt like previous massages were "fine" but didn't quite address what they were actually feeling
A Different Kind of Trust
Intuitive massage asks for a little more trust than a standard session: trust that I'm going to follow what I find rather than a checklist, and trust that spending extra time in one area (or moving faster through another) is intentional, not random. In return, most clients tell me it's the first massage that's felt like it was actually built around them, rather than something generic applied to them.
If you've ever left a massage feeling like it missed the point, this might be exactly the shift you're looking for.
